The History of the Suðurnes Rescue Team – search and rescue operations in Suðurnes

The Suðurnes Rescue Team was founded on April 16, 1994, when two powerful units merged: the Scout Rescue Team in Njarðvík and the Stakkur Rescue Team in Keflavík. A few years later, in 2000, the Eldey Accident Prevention Unit in Höfn also merged under the same umbrella.
Although the unit was formally founded in 1994, its history goes back much further. When the Eldey Accident Prevention Department was founded on December 6, 1931 in Hafnir, a strong and selfless rescue tradition began in the area – which now lives on in the work of the Suðurnes Rescue Unit.
Eldey was thus the second-oldest operating safety and rescue company in the country at the time – only Sigurvon in Sandgerði, founded in 1928, was older.
The history of the Suðurnes Rescue Team is therefore intertwined with the history of volunteers in Suðurnes – people who have stood watch for decades, responded to calls, saved lives and participated in strengthening the safety of society.
